About FIA qualifications

There are two options available in relation to Foundations in Accountancy (FIA):

  • you can complete all the exams in the FIA suite of examinations to become a Certified Accounting Technician (CAT); or 
  • you can complete stand alone certificates and diplomas.

Entry Requirements

No prior qualifications required

Examinations, cost and duration

In order to qualify as a Certified Accounting Technician:

  • Exams - you will need to complete 9 exams
  • Duration - it will take 6 months
  • Cost - £5,550 plus exam fees.

There is also the option to undertake exams as stand alone qualifications.

  • Introductory Certificate in Financial and Management Accounting:
    • Exams - 2 exams
    • Duration - 12 night classes
    • Cost - £900 (including exam fees)
  • Intermediate Certificate in Financial and Management Accounting
    • Exams - 2 exams
    • Duration - 3 - 6 months (studied for at the same as the Diploma in Accounting and Business qualification)
    • Cost - Included in cost of Diploma in Accounting and Business as studied for at the same time (plus £158 exam fees)
  • Diploma in Accounting and Business
    • Exams - 3 exams
      Duration - Three months 
    • Cost - £2287 (including exam fees)

    Introductory Certificate in Financial and Management Accounting - Equivalent to GCSE

    Qualify in as little as 12 evenings!

    • FA1 - Recording Financial Transactions
    • MA1 - Management Information

    Intermediate Certificate in Financial and Management Accounting - Equivalent to A level

    • FA2 - Maintaining Financial Records
    • MA2 - Managing Costs and Finance

    Diploma in Accounting and Business - A prestigious qualification can be gained in between 3-6 months.

    • F1/FAB - Accountant in Business
    • F2/FMA - Management Accounting
    • F3/FFA - Financial Accounting

    Certified Accounting Technician

    To become a Certified Accounting Technician, you will need to complete all the above exams plus two of three options below:

    • Foundations in Taxation
    • Foundations in Audit
    • Foundations in Financial Management

    FIA registration
